Concept by Magdalena Reiter
Last week we got some copies of Make Design Open. The booklet covers copyright issues, networks and the pillars for a possible new economy in design.
The booklet is a great intro for those who like to know more about Open Design, covering many different aspects that makes this movement possible. From the original concept and how it is developing, new ways of producing and funding your designs and even new market places.

We are apropriating the Via Cuccagna and customizing it. We want to do public design, in the public space, and we invite everybody interested to join us.
The MakerLab Milan has been happening since the 1st of April at the Superground (Artkichen). During the last weeks, we have been getting to know Milan and its inhabitants. Inspired by them, and together with some locals, we have develop two projects (read more here) which will be happening this week.
Parallel to that, we wanted to show our process live and open to the public during the Salone, for that we have set our self at the Via Cuccagna, just outside the Cascina Cuccagna, where we have build (and continue building) a space which covers our needs as creative activist.
What we want to do is:
- Open up the design process to all. Designers play the role of facilitators to help the public express its creativity
- Create a temporary meet up place for creatives, researchers and activist, who want to share their knowledge.
- Built a workshop where the ideas transfered and discussed can become reallity.
This is what we are doing.
In the calendar we will be updating some of the activities that are taking place.
Our temporary space at Via Cuccagna has:
- Co-working space with wi-fi:
- Workshop (with working bench and tools):
- Public cinema (For documentaries, and film evenings): (Under construction)
- Chilling area (with hope for sun):
- We have an analogue timetable where we (and you) will be writing what is going on each day:

There is a growing trend to use the term Open-, and the fields where this applies vary from programming, design and even data.
We see a huge opportunity to change the way we work together, how we consume (or prosume) things or even understand the social structures. Even though it is starting and we still do not know if it is an utopia or a plausible reality, we already see how we could create solutions for the every day life and for very complex challenges in a more collaborative, creative and effective manner.
In our research we wanted to find out the current situation in relation to this current trend of opening up. And we found several topics that people are discussing: community, participation, business models, copy and authorship, misuse of the term open-,…. To share our findings with the community, we started a series of episodes that gather these discussion insights and help others to understand what is going on and hopefully trigger some interesting discussions.
We have chosen to start with “Community and Participation”:
How do we create Open Culture?
How do we let the community take part in the process?
How do we structure collaboration?
How do we design complex things involving the user?
Openness is dependent on the community behind it and the content they create. It is a personal choice and a way of living.
